A childcare worker has been fined $6500 after failing to adequately supervise a two-year-old boy who drowned in the family day care centre pool.

Lachlan was two-years-old when he was found face down in the backyard pool of his Carramar Day
care centre in Western Australia on November 9 last year.

His carer, Karla Zablah, had left Lachlan alone in her backyard
when she walked inside to comfort a 10-month-old baby also
in her care.

Ms Zablah was fined $6500 after neglecting to perform necessary instructions on a checklist proceeding Lachlan's drowning

The little boy's parents, Melanie and Luke Mitchell, have called for tougher monitoring of
the day care sector in the state.

'There's so many people involved (in the system) with the
carer and the provider and the local government, that make
it easier for people to keep pointing at each other without actually making anyone accountable
for something like this,' Mrs Mitchell told The Weekend
West.

At Joondalup Magistrate's Court on Friday Ms Zablah was fined $6500 after neglecting to perform necessary instructions
on a checklist before Lachlan's drowning.

Ms Zablah, who had 17 years' experience looking after children, had pre-ticked
items on her list, a lawyer for the Department of Local Government and Communities
told the court.

One of the checks included making sure the pool fence was secure.

On a tribute page for Lachlan, Lachlan's Legacy , Melanie wrote that
the outcome for Karlah's prosecution had given their family
mixed emotions

Zablah's lawyer Chris Rimmer, said the carer had wrongly assumed Lachlan was behind her
when she went inside.

'All of us make mistakes in life, regrettably the mistake that my client
made had some very tragic consequences,' he said.

On a tribute page for Lachlan, Lachlan's Legacy, Melanie wrote
that the outcome for Karlah's prosecution had given their family mixed emotions.

'Relief and sadness seem to be the dominant conflicting feelings,' she wrote.

'Relief in that this part is over and was a favourable result which goes some way to establishing accountability, sadness that it
came to this given the beautiful relationship Lachlan had with Karla and how much he loved
her.'

Lachlan's mother added that they are now looking to the coronial inquest for closure.
